It is not often that a band comes by with more than 10 years live experience on its belt. Yet only now releasing their debut album. Meet Akoma. A well performing Danish symphonic opera metal band. When you see the list of heavyweights they have performed alongside, you know this will be good.
Akoma immediately gives evidence of a rich musical sound, both instrumental and vocal. Yet what bugs me is that the mastering process of the guitars produced a somewhat flat hollowed out sound. however that is a confict that is offset by the enjoyable siren songs of Tanya Bell. The title track Revangels is second on the cd and they immediately set the tone with strong riffs combined with melodic parts that make Tanya truly shine. The best part is, Liv Kristine comes to spoil us some more with her angelic vibes.
My favorite of Revangels, next to the title track is "Mesopotamia", it is beautifully set in and is just very balanced overal. But the opera outreach near the end is just a musical orgasm. However "Hands of Greed" was not very convincing. Especially not after such a great "Mesopotamia"
Vira immediately makes you forget the previous mundane parts. The proverbial kick in the behind phrase can be applied here. As powerfull guitars set the tone for an more agressive sound. And i really like it.
Taking everything into account that this CD offers, it becomes clear this is a mature band with still lots of growing potential left. Another plus side, Operatic soprano metal is a rare breed and not many bands are able to handle this vocal style. Fans of this genre will definatly be enthousiastic about Akoma.
