Generation Doom is an album with very powerful feelings attached to it. It starts with the first song ‘Zero’. Repeatedly hearing ‘I don’t give a fuck’ makes you listen to the album with the feeling that you can decide everything you want.
Nobody can beat you or bring you down. But hearing the crying babies in combination with guns being fired in the background, really gives you a chilled to the bone feeling to it. ‘But cowards only hear what they fear’. ‘I’d rather be in battle than in peace’. We don’t want to have wars and yet we are creating them. ‘Lord of War’ tells that story, and ends it with a child’s scream. ‘What is so terrible about a child screaming’? ‘Why should it disturb us’? ‘Just because we happened to be there to hear’?
I never took the time before to listen to ‘Royals’, originally by Lorde. But now Otep made the cover it became clear to me where that song is actually about. Not everybody has the money to do whatever they want. Not everybody needs expensive stuff to be happy. Not everybody who has money wants to be the person who only has everything in gold and everything else is to less to care about. ‘We don’t care, we’re driving Cadillac’s in our dreams’. ‘We don’t care, we aren’t caught up in your love affair’. The hunger for money can take over people’s minds and control them to do things they would’ve never thought of in the first place…
Like I said before, there is a lot going on in this album. It describes many feelings like experiencing power, sadness, doubt and frustration. Get this album, and listen to the hatred that is part of a beautiful world where everything is possible.
‘You know it just happens. It’s just life’. ‘People you’ve known for a long time become your enemies’. ‘They turn their backs on you’. ‘That doesn’t mean the friendship never meant anything, that’s just life’. ‘You lose people who are important, and you just keep going forward’.
